So as it were, after my exhibit on mental health, I was asked to be on the advisory board of Mental Health America and I accepted with honors. With that honor came an award in my name. The Bailie Award, “From Surviving to Thriving”. I had no words. I had only done what all of us who are struggling would do, survive. That being said, we have presented the Bailie award to several nominees and will again this year on Saturday, May 4th. I hope you can attend this community effort to raise awareness about mental health. It will be at The Farmers Marketplace at 429 Howard St, Spartanburg, SC 29303 from 5-7pm and free to the public.
In the Midst of a Trauma
So after my artist block which lasted over two years, against my better judgement, I broke down and went to therapy. Much to my surprise it actually helped.
A month or so in I decided to chronical my journey. This was something I have never done before…to actually express my feelings in my art? How absurd!
Little known to me, it was going to turn into something a lot bigger than myself. As usual, it just started as a personal adventure but, little by little, I realized this struggle wasn’t just mine. It also belonged to millions of others as well.
So I set out to educate people on what they don’t know about mental illness. Fear of the unknown is what has kept this condition in the dark. It’s 2021 and time to pull this subject into the light where it needs to be so we all can understand and people wont be afraid to get help. because of a stigma. #stopthestigma
This body of work will make it’s debut Tuesday, May 4th at the Artist Collective of Spartanburg. The exhibit will run through Saturday, May 29th with an opening reception on Thursday, May 20th from 5-9 pm.
